Geachte heer, mevrouw,
vereniging Internet Society Nederland nodigt u van harte uit op haar
lustrumbijeenkomst 'Pioneering & The New Internet'. De vereniging werd
vijftien jaar tijdens een drukbezochte bijeenkomst in Utrecht
opgericht.
Sprekers tijdens 'Pioneering and The New Internet' zijn onder meer
internetpioniers Daniel Karrenberg (Chief scientist van RIPE NCC,
en dit jaar opgenomen in de 'Internet Hall of Fame'), Vic Hayes (TU
Delft, 'vader van Wifi'), Rob Blokzijl (RIPE) en Kees Neggers (voormalig
directeur SURFnet en mede-oprichter ISOC Internationaal). Zij
blikken terug en vooruit samen met de jonge garde zoals Davied van
Berlo (oprichter Ambtenaar 2.0), Olaf Kolkman (directeur NLnet Labs en
oud-voorzitter van de Internet Architecture Board), Marietje Schaake
(lid Europees Parlement) en Sander Steffann (winnaar IPv6 Personality
Award 2011).
Presentatie is in handen van schrijver en mediakenner Jonathan Marks.
Op 22 november a.s. worden ook de ISOC.nl-Awards 2012 uitgereikt.
Iedere vijf jaar reikt Internet Society Nederland weer een aantal
awards uit, ondermeer op het gebied van 'beste maatschappelijke
internetinitiatief', 'beste overheidsinitiatief op het gebied van
internet', 'beste zakelijk internetinitiatief', 'Veiligheid en Privacy'
en 'internet en de kunsten'.
Op de shortlist met genomineerden staan opvallende namen zoals de 1%
club, Lektober, Hack de overheid en AMS-ix. Iedere categorie heeft een
eigen, zeer vakkundige jury bestaande uit prominente experts uit het
betreffende domein, met onder meer prof. Gerard van Oortmerssen
(Universiteit van Tilburg), Peter Lievense (hoofdredacteur iBestuur),
Simon Hania (Director Privacy and Data Protection TomTom), schrijver en
onderzoeker Arie Altena, Johan Krebbers (Global Chief Architect Shell),
Paul Slot (VP IT Operations KPN).

Een kijkje terug in de tijd

Op 24 november 1997 werd de vereniging Internet Society Nederland
opgericht tijdens een drukbezochte bijeenkomst in Utrecht. Toen wist
nog maar een minderheid in Nederland wat het internet was. Lang zou dat
niet duren. Met speciale campagnes liet Internet Society Nederland
onder voorzitterschap van oud-minister Koos Andriessen in winkelcentra,
op computerbeurzen, in televisieprogramma's en op allerlei andere
manieren ons land kennismaken met het internet. Van inbellen naar
netneutraliteit
Er was nog geen ADSL of internet via de kabel, internetten deed je door
het telefoonnummer van je internetprovider met je computer op te
bellen, om dan met een snelheid van maar liefst 56.6 kilobit per
seconde te kunnen internetten. Als je klaar was ging je offline -
anders werd het te duur, en bovendien was je telefoon bezet zolang je
inbelde. Het duurde niet lang voor het land werd overspoeld met
cd-rom's van internetaanbieders, die je met honderden 'gratis' uren
over de streep probeerden te trekken.
In vijftien jaar tijd is veel gebeurd. Internet is inmiddels niet meer
weg te denken uit de samenleving. Dataretentie, netneutraliteit,
cookie-wetgeving, internetblokkades - het zijn maar enkele steekwoorden
uit een stortvloed aan ontwikkelingen waar we in 1997 nog geen weet van
hadden. Een generatie is inmiddeld opgegroeid met internet, en lang
niet iedereen die er toen bij was kan er dit keer nog bij zijn.
Op 22 november kijken we terug op vijftien jaar Internet Society
Nederland, en een hectische tijd waarin Nederland een internationale
toppositie op internet heeft opgebouwd. En we kijken samen met
internetpioniers en aanstormend talent ook vooruit naar wat ons nog te
wachten staat. Mis het niet!

'Pioneering & The New Internet'. The Netherlands chapter was founded
fifteen years ago in Utrecht this month.
Spreakers during 'Pioneering and The New Internet' are internet
pioneers Daniel Karrenberg (Chief scientist of RIPE NCC, and an
inductee in the 'Internet Hall of Fame'), Vic Hayes (TU Delft, 'father
of Wifi'), Rob Blokzijl (RIPE) and Kees Neggers (former director of
SURFnet and founding member of ISOC global). They will look back and
forward together with upcoming talent such as Davied van Berlo (founder
of the Civil Servant 2.0 network), Olaf Kolkman (director NLnet Labs
and former chair of the Internet Architecture Board), Marietje Schaake
(member of the European Parliament) and Sander Steffann (winner IPv6
Personality Award 2011).
To celebrate this wonderful occasion we will be handing out the
ISOC.nl-Awards 2012 on November 22nd as well. Every five years our
chapter rewards remarkable and worthwhile efforts in categories such as
'Best civil society internet initiative', 'Best internet related
government initiative', 'Best industry internet initiative', 'Security
and Privacy' and 'internet and the arts'.
On the shortlist with nominees there are some remarkable names such as
the 1% club, The Next Web, Lektober, Hack de overheid ('Hack the
government') and AMS-ix. Every category has its own dedicated jury with
well-known and higly regarded experts from the domain - such as prof.

Looking back in time
--------------------
On November 24th 1997 the association Internet Society Nederland
was founded during a crowded launch event in Utrecht. At the time
only a minority of people in the Netherlands knew what the internet
was. That wouldn't take long. With special campaigns Internet Society
Nederland - initially chaired by former minister Koos Andriessen -
introduced the Dutch to the internet in shopping malls, at computer
fairs, in television programmes and various other ways.
There was no (A)DSL available to consumers, nor was there internet
through the cable. 'Internetten' was done by dialing the phone number
of your internet provider with your computer, and under optimal
conditions the modem was able to reach a staggering speed of 56.6 kilobit
per second. If you were done, you would go offline - otherwise it would
be too expensive. Not to mention that using the internet would block
your phone for incoming calls completely, blocking important phone calls
to many unhappy teenagers and disgruntled parents. It did not last long
before the country was flooded with cd rom's of internet providers,
that tried to haul in customers by providing hundres of 'free' hours of
access.
In fifteen years time a lot has happened. Internet is now an integral
part of our society. Data retention, net neutrality, cookie legislation,
internet blocking - just a couple of headlines from an avalanche of
developments we did not have a clue about in 1997. Meanwhile a new
generation of digital natives has been raised with internet, embracing
a whole new lifestyle. Sadly, at the same time not everybody that was
there at the launch is still with us.
On November 22nd we will look back on fifteen years of Internet Society
Netherlands, and a hectic time in which the Netherlands has embraced
the internet and has made significant contributions to its growth. And
we will look back with the people that helped shape it and some of the
people that will continue their work into the future to reminisce
and discuss what awaits us. Don't miss it!
